PAle notes: Sound Quality/Recording History

This was recorded on 4-track reel-to-reel by Kenny Ryman. The basic recordings all sounded very good; unfortunately, as my imagination and ambition far exceeded the number of available tracks, there was a lot of bouncing and compression. Compounding this, I had a very short period of time to mix it, using equipment I was totally unfamiliar with. Kenny was not available to assist so I did the best I could, but the masters have some definite problems, tape hiss and noise chief among them. This probably has the worst sound quality of all the original albums. It is comparable, for example, to an early Who or Small Faces record. (Before they were remastered.) If you can handle that, you'll find some good music here.

As for the future, Kenny Ryman has recently sent me digital transfers of the original master 4-tracks. I should be able to make things sound drastically better, but this will be a long project. I do not anticipate having a remix/remaster ready before 2006.
